Sounds like the act of a crazy person.. but more and more, its happening to normal every day atheletes. Join us as we have a look at some professional football players and the damage due to the game.
chronic traumatic encephalopathy, known as CTE and more generically termed concussion syndrome is rapidly plaguing more and more atheletes and ex athletes of the NFL… and we’ll begin with players who are still living.
Brett Favre Mr Green Bay himself is a longtime staple of the game, having ammased a career that’s probably close to untouchable and should probably stay that way for a long time.
Beloved running back Tony Dorsett also makes our list. Dorsett spent over a decade in the NFL, playing mostly for the Dallas cowboys after being their first round draft choice in 1977.
Bernie Kosar was touted as the king of Cleveland when he was drafted, and then took the Browns to the playoffs. He would then go on to set a two decade long record of having thrown 308 consecutive passes without an interception.
Jim McMahon might be one of the more controversial quarterbacks to have ever graced the doorstep of an NFL locker room. During his tenure with the Chicago Bears he was flamboyant, rebellious, known to party, and generally did his own thing. He was constantly seen as an underdog, but also constantly made a target by big hulking men trying to smash him into the ground.
Frank Gifford was a great football player, that cannot be denied. During 12 seasons alone with the New York Giants, he rushed for over 3 thousand yards with 800 plus carries and 34 touchdowns. He was a former MVP, and went to the pro bowl 8 times… he also made the pro football hall of fame.
Mike Webster was a well decorated veteran of the league who actually became disabled before his retirement. Post retirement, Webster is said to have suffered many ailments including Amnesia, dementia and depression.
The events regarding Jovan Belchers death, and what actually caused the nightmare that occurred are forever trapped in the minds of any fan of the NFL. Just 25 years old, Belcher had a long career in front him… but tragedy would strike on December 1st, 2012 where he ended his life.
Former Atlanta Falcons safety Ray Easterling. He was said to have been going through a terrible bout of depression and showed signs of dementia before shooting himself in 2012.
New York giants safety Tyler Sash was only 27 years old when he ended his life with a drug overdose. His mother had reported that she saw odd behavior in her son which included memory loss, outbursts, and periods of confusion. He would also later be diagnosed with CTE.
Andre Waters was long revered as having been one of the leagues hardest defensive hitters. He lead the eagles on 4 different years in tackles, and accumulated 15 interceptions over 11 seasons in the NFL. He would end up taking his life in 2006 at his home in Tampa Florida.. leaving no suicide note and prompting an increased look into the effects of CTE.
Junior Seau is best known for his time with the san diego chargers, and was well loved around the league.. named the most dynamic player of his era, he was known for a passionate play style and getting really into things when he would commit a big play. When he was hurt, he would refuse to leave games and displayed a work ethic above and beyond many of his comrades.
In 2013, over 4000 players were involved in legal procedures against the NFL for what they feel is a negligent attitude towards the health and safety of their players.
