Tardar Sauce aka Grumpy Cat is without doubt the most recognizable real life cat in the world. She came to prominence back in 2012 when her owner's brother posted a photo of her on Reddit. She quickly gained popularity, rising above all other lolcats as an internet icon, and being a popular subject of internet memes in which funny negative quotes are made. Tardar was born to a calico mother and a father of an unknown breed. Her seemingly grumpy face is actually the result of an underbite and feline dwarfism. Despite her face, her owner claims that she leads a "normal" life like any other kitty. Grumpy Cat has become a household name, with her name and image trademarked - making her owner a multimillionaire. Her facebook page has over 8 million likes, she's been on the cover of New York Magazine, and has her own statue at Madame Tussauds. She's also made countless media appearances, appearing in ads, TV shows, and has her own line of official merchandise in the form of t-shirts and mugs. Oh, and the owner is currently suing some coffee makers for selling unauthorized "Grumppuccino" iced coffee beverages. also.. honorable mention here goes to lil' bub as a close runner up. with those crazy crack eyes and tongue that cant seem to get into her mouth, she will no doubt be giving grumpy cat a run for his money in 2017.
5. Uncle Sam the bald eagle
The bald eagle named Uncle Sam managed to do something that half the population of America have been wanting to do for over a year; attack Donald Trump - physically. And getting away with it. Nothing symbolizes 'Murica more than a majestic bald eagle, so it’s only natural that presidential candidate Donald Trump agreed to have one posed with him for his Time magazine cover shoot late last year. The 27 year old bird was brought up to the 25th floor of Trump Tower, where Trump's cover story was to be held. But footage released later shows that Uncle Sam is no docile bird, and managed to spook Trump a few times during the session. When Trump tried to reach for something on his desk close to wear Uncle Sam was sitting, the feisty eagle lunged for Trump's hand. Trump recoiled in shock, managing to retract his hand in time. The clip quickly went viral, and multiple gifs and memes were created of the hilarious incident.
4. Zika mosquitoes
By acting as vector for the transport of many diseases such as malaria and dengue, mosquitoes kill more humans than any other animal per year. And in 2016, these standing champions continued their annual killing spree with a widespread epidemic of the Zika virus. Thousands of babies in Latin America have been diagnosed with devastating birth defects caused by the mosquito-borne virus, mainly in the form of microcephaly, a condition in which the brain does not develop properly resulting in a smaller than normal head. And unfortunately, there's no cure for the condition. Zika outbreaks have largely hurt the affected countries' economies, mainly impacting the tourism sector. It was also one of the main issues surrounding this year's Summer Olympics in Rio, as the host country was where the main outbreak began.
3. Tilikum the killer whale
The lovable killer whale that lives up to its name. Full-time performer and part-time serial killer, Tilikum has managed to garner worldwide attention over his tragic three decades of life in captivity. Tilikum was captured in the seas near Reykjavík, Iceland in 1983 when he was 2 years old. He spent his early years of captivity in "Sealand of the Pacific", a public aquarium in Canada. In 1991, he killed a trainer after a show by dragging her into the waters till she drowned. The aquarium was closed soon after, and Tilikum was transferred to SeaWorld Orlando, Florida where he has remained since. At SeaWorld, Tilikum has been involved in 2 other killings; the first, a man who trespassed the centre in 1999, and the second, his trainer in 2010. He got away with all murders of course, since he's a killer whale. Plus his sperm is worth millions, and has sired 21 offsprings so far. Tilikum became the star of the 2013 documentary film Blackfish, which focused on the issues and controversies surrounding killer whales held captive. Tilikum’s tragic life depicted in the film, coupled by an online petition caused several musical groups to cancel their scheduled performances at SeaWorld. The park is also ending its orca shows due to public protests spearheaded by PETA. They even managed to stop the toy company Mattel from manufacturing SeaWorld Barbies.
