Throughout history there have been many great empires, but the question is: Which of these empires was the largest? Today we are taking a look at the largest empires ever.

Throughout history, there have been many great emperors such as Genghis Khan, Augustus, and Caligula but you know which ones controlled the largest empires ever?

The Tang Dynasty

If only it were a Dynasty dedicated to a monkey addicted to a sweet orange elixir. The Tang Dynasty was a Chinese Empire that rules from 618 – 907 A.D. The empire stretched from modern-day China and covered most of central Asia from Kazakhstan to Vietnam.

The Yuan Dynasty

Delicious chicken is not the only thing the Mongols gave us. The Yuan Dynasty, founded by the infamous Mongol Kublai Khan was established in 1271 after decades of rule under the Mongol Empire.

Umayyad Caliphate

Founded in 661, the Umayyad Caliphate is the 7th largest empire in history and in the top 4 largest Muslim Empires. At it’s peak the Umayyad Caliphate held nearly one-third of the world’s population.

Abbasids Empire

Historians often classify the rule of the Abbasid Empire to be a golden age in Islamic history. In addition to the Abbasids, literature they were also known for their flourishing art ware.

The Second French Colonial Empire

The Second French Colonial Empire is often characterized as the first stable political power after the close of the Napoleonic Wars.

The Spanish Empire

While you may not think of them for much more than the Empanada, the Spanish Empire has been one of the most influential political powers in history.

Qing Dynasty

The Qing Dynasty was by far the largest of the Chinese Dynasties and also the last. They ruled for over 300 years controlling most of eastern Asia and modern China. I can promise you that this Chinese Dynasty gave the world much more than an irrational appreciation for tea.

The Russian Empire

The Russian Empire might come to mind when you hear words like serfdom or names like Peter The Great and Nicholas the Second. The Russian Empire is one of the few political powers that can say they owned 1/6th of the earth’s landmass.

The Mongol Empire

Founded by the great Ghengis Khan the Mongol Empire is one of the most infamous empires of all time. Known for their advanced military tactics the Mongols had one of the most successful military conquests in history.

The British Empire

The sun never sets on the British Empire is one of the best characterizations of a 13,700,000 sq mi empire. There are also not enough words to detail the influences of Imperial Britain. At its peak, Britain owned 23% of the world’s population and 24% of the earth’s landmass.
