With Donald Trump having taken his seat in the white house the question is how big of a part Melania Trump will play. Will she be a big influence just like Michelle Obama was or will she stay in the background?

-- First Ladies. In the early days, being a First Lady was almost a completely dismissable term. Just a White House hostess, making her husband look good. After all, it was the President that really mattered. But there were women who refused to just be the President’s wife.

Number 6: Dolley Madison

Dolley Madison seemed to have remained one of the most beloved first ladies in the US history. She had it all - charm, compassion, and a mind of her own - she wasn’t the one who just stood in the background.

Favorite Dolly Madison quote? ““There is one secret, and that is the power we all have in forming our own destinies.”

Number 5: Lucy Hayes

Another influential First Lady from the early days was Lucy Hayes, also known as mother Lucy. She was the 19th in line to take the First Lady title and despite her popularity, she made some erm, bold decisions during her time. But let’s come back to that a bit later. One thing you have to know about Lucy Hayes is that she was officially the first First Lady that graduated from college.

Favorite Lucy Hayes quote? “Woman’s mind is as strong as man’s…equal in all things and is superior in some.”

Number 4: Edith Wilson

Edith Wilson deserves her spot as the 4th most influential First Lady on our list. Why, you ask? While the war completely overshadowed her usual role in the White House, Edith Wilson certainly managed to become an influence as the nation’s 28th First Lady.

Number 3: Eleanor Roosevelt

Alright, we’re down to top 3 and we just have to mention Eleanor Roosevelt, arguably one of the most popular First Ladies in her time. Not only did she raise five children - the 32rd First Lady had a life story of no other.

Number 2: Hillary Clinton

It is a well known fact that Hillary Clinton often asked herself “What would Eleanor Roosevelt do?” when facing a difficult time in her career as a politician. We first met Hillary Clinton as the 42th First Lady and wife of President Bill Clinton. But Hillary Clinton brought so much more than that during her time in the White House.

Number 1: Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama has definitely been the First Lady with the most social media presence in the modern world. She earned the title of the first African American First Lady and the first First Lady that ever used Twitter - but there is so much more Michelle Obama managed to do during her 8 years in the White House.

So what’s in store for Melania Trump? Will she be able to live to the expectations of her past successors or will she choose a calm family life and put her son first before any political activities? Will she stand her ground or simply back away, letting her husband and his children take care of the business and political world of America? All we can say is, she has a handful of expectations in front of her.
